Sunshine, green grass and beautiful flowers! Just what 49 Wisconsinites wanted to see at the beginning of their Hawaiian Farm Tour. I’ll be posting and sharing some of my conversations with the agriculture specialists we had a chance to visit across all three of the Hawaiian Islands we covered. First up was Oahu and the city of Honolulu. Home to more than a million citizens – it looks like any other big city, until you get out of town. Then, you’ll notice red colored soil and wide open spaces. That’s where several large agribusiness companies have set up various research facilities and plant breeding facilities. Joe Para, operations manager for Monsanto, spent some time with the group explaining how research in Hawaii works and answering questions from the group on everything from water management to working with neighbors.
