Fitting in after being active military can be difficult for a lot of veterans. Now Wisconsin is acting as a testing ground for a pilot program pairing veterans with Wisconsin farmers to try and find their fit.
Denise Chapin is the program manager for the Therapeutic and Supported Employment Services through the VA in Madison. They’ve received a federal grant to pursue these pairings, and says it’s amazing what relief veterans are finding in working the land, being around animals, and the self directed tasks that are what Wisconsin agriculture is all about.
The program also includes partnerships with Madison College and the Farm and Industry Short Course programming to assist veterans on the technical side of agriculture.
